02
biology
what it is
elastin is the protein that gives skin its bounce. unlike collagen, which is replenished throughout life, the bulk of elastin in human skin is laid down before adulthood and is replaced very slowly. the enzymes that build new elastin become less active with age, and uv damage further fragments the existing fibers. the visible result is the slow loss of skin's ability to spring back.
peptide signals can nudge fibroblasts to express more of the precursor protein, tropoelastin, and to assemble it into mature fibers. the supporting cast of enzymes (lysyl oxidase, fibulins) has to be available too, which is why elastin is a harder cosmetic target than collagen.
drip's discovery pipeline scores candidates on predicted tropoelastin upregulation alongside predicted toxicity and stability. the goal is a sequence that shifts the synthesis side of an unfavorable balance without overstimulating fibroblasts in ways that read as inflammation.
