02
biology
what it is
matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are a family of enzymes that break down the structural proteins in skin, primarily collagen and elastin. they exist as a normal part of skin's repair and remodeling cycle. with age and uv exposure, MMP activity rises and outpaces the rate at which fibroblasts replace what is broken down. the visible result is the slow thinning that consumers read as wrinkles and loss of firmness.
peptides can dial MMP activity back. some bind the active site directly. others tune the upstream signals that tell skin cells to release more MMPs in the first place. either path slows the breakdown side of the equation, which is why MMP inhibition pairs naturally with collagen synthesis on a label.
drip's discovery pipeline scores candidates on predicted MMP-2 and MMP-9 inhibition together with predicted irritation and stability. the goal is enough inhibition to shift the steady state without enough to disrupt the normal turnover that keeps skin healthy.
